What is a Windsurfing Medical Certificate?

A windsurfing medical certificate is an official document, signed by a registered doctor, confirming that you are fit and healthy enough to safely take part in a windsurfing event, regatta, or competition. Many international windsurfing organisers — particularly in France, Italy, and across Europe — require competitors to provide a valid medical certificate before they can complete their registration.

This certificate is often mandatory for major events such as Défi Wind, and national-level windsurfing championships. It may also be requested for local regattas, endurance windsurfing challenges, or when joining a windsurfing club.

At Fit Certify, our experienced sports doctors issue same-day online medical certificates for windsurfing. Your certificate is completed, signed, and delivered directly to your email inbox in PDF format — making the process quick, stress-free, and compliant with European and international requirements.

Dr Simon Shaw, Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder at Fit Certify

I’m Simon, Founder and Chief Medical Officer at Fit Certify. My career began in emergency medicine, where I spent over 15 years helping patients in critical situations. Over time, I moved into sports medicine, and for the past seven years I’ve led a team of doctors dedicated to supporting people with the medical certification they need to compete.

I realised that many sports enthusiasts — including windsurfers — face the same barrier: event organisers require a doctor-signed medical certificate, and getting one can be unnecessarily stressful. For world-class competitions such as Défi Wind, paperwork is as essential as your board and sail. Without it, you simply can’t compete.

That’s why I created Fit Certify: to make the process fast, reliable, and stress-free. Our mission is simple — you train hard for your sport, and we take care of the paperwork. We deliver certificates that are fully compliant with French, Italian, and international regulations, so you can focus on preparing for the challenge ahead.

If you have any questions or need support, my team and I are here to help. Just drop us a line at hello@fitcertify.com — we’ll make sure you get the right certificate, on time, every time.

What Do I Need to Provide?

To issue your windsurfing medical certificate, we’ll ask you to complete a short online health questionnaire. This allows our doctors to confirm that you’re fit to participate safely and ensures your certificate is valid for your chosen event — whether that’s Défi Wind in France, or a local club regatta in Europe.

That’s it — no in-person appointment is required. Once your form is submitted, one of our doctors will review the information and issue your signed certificate. With our same-day service, most windsurfers receive their certificate in just a few hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a windsurfing medical certificate?

A windsurfing medical certificate is a document signed by a registered doctor confirming that you are fit to safely take part in windsurfing events, regattas, or competitions. Organisers use it as medical clearance to reduce health risks for participants in demanding open-water and high-wind conditions. Certificates must usually be signed and stamped by a doctor and may need to include specific wording such as “no contraindication to the practice of sailing in competition.”

Many international and national windsurfing competitions require a valid medical certificate before you can register. These include major events such as:

  • Défi Wind (France)

  • PWA World Tour events

  • National and regional regattas in France, Italy, and Spain

  • Endurance windsurfing races and club-level competitions in Europe

Some local clubs and schools may also ask for a certificate when issuing a licence or membership.

Yes. Défi Wind requires all participants to provide a doctor-signed medical certificate dated within one year of the competition’s end date. The certificate must state “no contraindication to the practice of sailing in competition” and include the doctor’s signature and stamp/seal. If you are under 18, you must also provide parental authorisation.

You can obtain a windsurfing medical certificate in the UK either through your GP, a sports medicine clinic, or an online provider such as Fit Certify. Our doctors are experienced in completing event-specific certificates that meet European competition standards. Certificates are issued as secure PDF files that you can submit directly to organisers.

With Fit Certify, you can request a certificate entirely online:

  1. Complete a short medical questionnaire.

  2. Your responses are reviewed by a GMC-registered sports doctor.

  3. If approved, your certificate is signed and delivered to your email inbox in PDF format the same day.

No in-person consultation is required, making this the fastest option for international competitors.

Most windsurfing organisers — including Défi Wind — require that your certificate is issued within the last 12 months. Some events may specify shorter timeframes (e.g. within 6 months), so always check the event’s official rules. If your health changes after the certificate is issued, you may need to obtain a new one.

At Fit Certify, certificates are processed and sent the same day – typically within just a few hours. If you go through your GP or regular doctor, the turnaround time may be longer – often a few weeks.

Conditions that significantly increase the risk of sudden illness or injury during intense water sports may prevent you from being approved. Examples include:

  • Uncontrolled heart or lung disease

  • Severe asthma or epilepsy

  • Recent major surgery or injury

  • Unstable mental health conditions that could impair judgement on the water

In such cases, the doctor may request further information, postpone approval, or decline to issue a certificate.

Yes. If a doctor reviews your application and decides that you are not medically fit to compete, Fit Certify offers a full refund. Your safety is our priority, and you will receive guidance on the next steps if you wish to seek further medical evaluation.

Event organisers often require very specific wording. For example, Défi Wind mandates that the certificate states:
“No contraindication to the practice of sailing in competition” (“non contre-indication à la pratique de la voile en compétition”).

It must also include:

  • The doctor’s signature

  • The doctor’s official stamp or seal

  • The date of issue (must be within the past 12 months)

Yes. Most windsurfing competitions — especially in France and Italy — will not accept a certificate without both a doctor’s signature and an official stamp/seal. A digital PDF certificate from Fit Certify contains all required details in a format accepted by international organisers.

In some cases, yes. If you already hold a sailing licence with a “competition” category, certain organisers may accept this instead of a medical certificate. However, most international events (including Défi Wind) still require a separate certificate for foreign participants.

Yes. Competitors under 18 are usually required to provide a valid medical certificate as well as parental or guardian authorisation. Défi Wind, for example, has a minimum age limit of 13 with additional parental consent paperwork.
