Every year, thousands of endurance athletes attempt one of the toughest trail-running races on the planet — Tor des Géants, a 330km mountain ultra across the Aosta Valley with over 24,000 metres of elevation gain, brutal climbs, exposed ridges, and unpredictable alpine weather. The 2026 edition of Tor des Géants takes place from Friday 11 to Sunday 20 September 2026.

Before you lace up, there’s an essential requirement you can’t skip: you must provide a valid medical certificate to compete.

In this short guide I’ll explain why you need a medical certificate, and how Fit Certify can help you get it online — from anywhere in the world.

Do you need a medical certificate for Tor des Géants 2026?

Yes. Under Italian regulations (and per the official rules of the VDA Trailers / TORX® organisation), all runners in Tor des Géants must submit a valid “sport medical certificate” attesting to their fitness for competitive trail running.

Specifically:

You may not be allowed to start the race without a valid medical certificate.

Does Tor des Géants 2026 have a Medical Certificate Template?

Yes — Tor des Géants provides its own official medical certificate template each year. The form confirms that you have “no contraindications and are suitable for the competitive practice of trail running” and must be completed, signed, and stamped by a licensed doctor.

You can normally download the latest version from the event organiser’s website once released, or request a copy from them directly. Runners living outside Italy usually need to use the specific template for foreign participants, which must be uploaded before the registration deadline.

Why Is a Medical Certificate Needed?

Tor des Géants is an extremely demanding event — 330km, 24,000+ metres of climbing, variable weather, long nights, and severe fatigue over several days. The mix of altitude, continuous exertion, dehydration, calorie deficit, and sleep deprivation pushes the body well beyond normal limits.

For runners with underlying conditions — such as high blood pressure, asthma, heart rhythm issues, or a history of chest pain or surgery — these stresses can turn a manageable problem into a serious medical event, often far from immediate assistance on remote mountain terrain.

The medical certificate isn’t just paperwork. It’s confirmation that you’ve been medically assessed and cleared to take on prolonged, high-intensity effort in harsh conditions, helping to reduce preventable risks during one of the toughest endurance races in the world.
